Question 4

Question 3

Question 2

Question 1

In what ways doe your media product use, develop and challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Being able to create this music video i had to do a lot of research, looking into previous successful music videos from well known artists to students. i gathered a wide range of knowledge from this research, it all contributed to my finished product - Love in the dark by Adele.

I looked into various related artists that shared the same genre as me, artists like Christian Aguilera , Leonie Lewis and Alicia Keys. In previous blog posts you can see that i researched into these artist and created a portfolio about their personalities and style of music, plus the typical conventions of their own style of music videos. I found that their music videos include a narrative along with two different scenes of performance and some setting shots, so i based my music video around them ideas and created my music video. As i recored the stages of creating my music on my blog you can see that i have had many version of my music video including different types of settings, from dancing footage to a variety of performance shots. With the use of my cinematography and editing my music video follows in the style of a real music video, the 3rd or 4th shot into my final version is a tracking / tilt shot of me walking up the stairs, i personally think this is a great clear clean shot and shots like this are throughout my video, By having clips like this helps my music video look like a real produced one.

Attention to detail is crucial when creating your own music video costumes, props, makeup and setting and all aspects to mise-en-scene plays a vital part in the production stage, if you don't follow the codes and conventions its won't be successful. I challenged the usual conventions by using a mixture of slow and fast cuts of footage as this song needs to have a variety of scenes throughout. You can easily identify my genre and that was my aim of this project.

White background footage

These are screen shots of the new footage i filmed to use after the bridge of my song, i have singing and acting shots to add in the gaps i have left. When filming this we didn't understand as to why there was a blue effect, we tried to justify this but struggled. I just continued to film and said i would edit it with colour adjustments on final cut pro.

New footage for after the bridge of the song

Following the style of successful music videos in my re search i see that after the bridge of songs they use footage that hasn't been used previously, so with my new footage i filmed yesterday i added it in after the bridge. They do this so the audience stays interested so they don't keep seeing the same clips over and over again.

I filmed on a white background to show differiaction between the performance on the black back drop, however i used different shop types i filmed long and mid shots of myself singing and acting.

I wore a beige jumper with black trousers with a classic everyday makeup look and had my hair curly. the beige jumper connects with the beige jacket worn in the park and black trousers gives it that sophisticated look. I also had my hair curly as i have used every other hair style in previous footage.

Layering

I loved the idea of layering footage over one another, i think it looks really nice and fits well. Some clips i used the same footage to layer but some i used completely different stuff and in one clip (the top right hand corner) I layered the clips of me walking down the path shooting from behind me and then filmed from the side.

Editing

All the editing was done by me, i had ideas for some clips and i knew how i wanted to edit them. however ideas you plan in your head do not come out how you would like, for example at the end of my song i wanted to rewind the whole clip in fast motion. I thought this was going to be easy and achivable however when it came to editing it wasn't as easy as it seemed, trying to get the right speed to fit in the gap with it going at a good pace to flow with the music was a task. I eventually did it but final cut pro began to lag so i couldn't see how it looked, i decided to get ride of it and replace the idea with new footage.

Cinematography

As I'm working on my own i couldn't really rely on people to help me film as its a solo project, most of my camera work is placed on a trip pod however some footage and camera shot types i did need assistance so i asked my media classmates to help and they was happy to help.

Best footage

From all the footage from the Danson park setting this clip is my best clip, it follows me walk panning from my feet to my head as i walk up the stairs, its really clean and crisp which I'm so pleased with.

Editing

Today i stayed back and continued to edit my music video with the new footage i have from Danson park, the footage came out really good and works well with the stuff i already have. I added a sepia effect to all the clips from today to make it look more warm as it came out quite blue.

Filming at Danson park

Today i went out to film some extra footage as i had a lot of gaps in my project, some scenery & body shots of me was needed as it would connect well with what i already have.

I filmed a lot as its best to have enough footage then not enough, plus if i needed to re film scenes there might not be a day with the same lighting and weather therefore the footage wouldn't look consistent. So by filming a lot i can replace scenes if i need to.

More Shot Locations

Sinead suggested to go to the park and get some full body shots of me in a different outfits an setting shots to help fill the gaps i have in my footage. This was a possible suggestion but i did want to focus on something with lighting like a variety of lighting in colors shining on me whilst acting or to go up London and film some lighting from shops and so on. A decision between the two was hard but i felt as if Sineads idea was easier and will connect better with what i have already

Rose footage

Here is a screenshot of a few clips of footage i had filmed today, these don;t show the multiple angles used but show how clear and bright i want and have my footage. Low and high angles an pan and fan motions were a few of many camera clips i had got.

Set up
  • black box as the background
  • a single light angled above the shot
  • tripod placed center to get the majority of shots
  • steady cam when i done closeups

Planning for footage

As i have deleted a lot of footage i have many gaps therefore i need to fill them, as i mentioned in previous blogs i have been brainstorming ideas that connect with my vision. i wanted a symbolic item that represents love but can be destroy as that is what happens to "jazmine" relationship.

I had chosen a rose for this item as its elegant, a representation of love and a new object /idea that i haven't seen used in music videos to date. My idea was for the rose to have pretty shots with closes ups and different angles an then the idea of destroying it came into my head as it will help the audience understand the narrative,

Black and white effect

majority of my footage has the black and white effect, before the effect the original color does look nice but they different shots makes the color balance vary therefore its not consistent. however with the black and white effect the colors are mutual and if needed i can play a round with the tools to make some shots darker or lighter then others so they fit well.

Old footage compared to new

As you can see there is a huge difference between the two snapshots, the color, angle, focus, footage and appearance is 100 times better in the black and white clip. even thought i wanted red to be connected i found that it doesn't help the footage as it looks unclear. even the angle im standing at makes the footage that much better, plus my makeup and performance is a lot better as well.

The lighting in the new footage makes me so much clearer and shows my features, before they was hidden from the dark lighting and added color. i removed the floating dots also as i personally dont think they fit in well with my vision for the final piece.

Performance re filming

Today i took home a camera and tripod and set up a black backdrop, i re done my makeup, hair and picked a new outfit and begun to film my new performance scene. i filmed this at home and at forst trying to find a area to film was hard as i didn't bring no extra lighting home or had a area possible to film where there was good lighting. I have south facing windows and a extended wall in my kitchen so i set up the backdrop facing the windows and began to film. the footage came out amazing and really gives my video a clean crisp classy look.

The background used was a black sheet pinned up facing the windows, it was quick easy thinking as i didn't want to loose this natural lighting as the sun goes down early due to the time of year, For my make up i done simple base foundation and filled my eyebrows in and applied lashes, i wanted my face to be made up but nothing compared to last time. i need my appearance to be fresh and classy as that is the style i want to use through out.

Analysed feedback

I did have a lot of blank spaces with no footage, i knew this would be picked up on as there was as lot so i knew i had to start with filming some new footage. Plus it also said that i had to adjust the effects that i had already applied, i needed to play around with the levels and brightness as it looked off colour and would look better in black and white like some of the other footage.

Last bit of feedback

What needs to be done

As i am now working on my own i began to look back on what footage i have an started to make changes so i know how much footage i needed to re film. The performance of me singing was deleted as i thought it looked grainy and i didn't like my outfit, hair or makeup, plus my lip singing wasn't great so i needed to improve on my acting to make it more believable.

I got rid of the dancing scenes and started to develop a new idea to fill its space as the setting to dance is no long available and the deadline for the music video was near and i couldn't keep waiting around. I brainstormed many ideas but deciding one was hard, most of the footage was now gone and i was left with very little to work with, this meant i had to get on with the re filming.

Setting for the dancing filming

·      I used the 5 main lights to light up the area im dancing in but dimmed them so they weren’t as harsh, Tyrell had an idea of using a spot light however when we used it it weren’t as good as he imagined so we stuck to multiply lights. We discovered a problem , as this drama room is also a classroom there are lights and electronic devices with coloured lights such as he interactive white board and computers, we found that when filming they were visible and needed to be covered, we went round and covered all the extra lighting with black paper so the darkness was not ruined.

16/01/17

·      Today the final decision for the group to split up, Tyrell has left to make his own music video. I’m not sure whether Danny is still committed therefore I have to complete the video myself, it will be a challenge however im up for it and im ready to commit to getting it done.

Cover image of digipak

As i said before about images from the shoot, i chose this from many other options and begun to edit and then produce this as my cover image with the title "illusion of love" next to it.

I wanted the clean airbrush look for for my face as all celebs have this and i think pictures look rubbish if their not edited. i adjusted the brightness, contrast, saturation, shadows and highlights to make myself and the shadow darker, i done this on the app PicsArt on my phone as i struggle to use photoshop and due to editing my personal pictures i knew the edited style i wanted to go for. i also added a redish/pink filter over the top as red is within my colour theme, the colour red connects with the idea of love which is what the music video is about.

Photo shoot pictures

Here are a few of many pictures we took on the photo shoot, i picked about 12 pictures and edited them all and used them within my magazine and digipak, the majority of photos came out really well however some were awful and were not going to be used.

Filming day

Today me and danny set up the music video set in the drama room and tyrell joined us later as he had a lesson, me and danny discovered how to create the idea of the silhouette and brainstormed how we was going to create the set up for the dance section.

Danny had the idea to have the lights behind the screen along with me and have me move around behind the screen in order to create it but we discovered that it didn't work as the space was very limited due to all the lights and it was a potential hazard as i could fall over, plus on camera it didn't even look good. So i said to add another light and let me move around in front of the screen and it looked amazing! the silhouette looked clean and sharp an created the best footage in the whole video.
